New Report Shows Downturn in Cannabis Sales in Montana
Recreational marijuana has been available in Montana since January 2022, since then, sales numbers have continually been rising. However, within the last year, it appears that a plateau of sorts may have been reached within the industry.
In new figures released by the Montana Department Revenue, the month of December saw a small decline in those sales across the state. Has the influx of new dispensaries caused a burnout in the business?

State Figures From 2023 Compared to 2024 in Montana Dispensaries
Data from the MDHHS states that in 2023, total sales for marijuana in Montana for December were as follows:
- Medical sales of $4,545,656
- Recreational sales of $22,340,787
- Total sales in December 2023 of $26,886,443

In December 2024, data shows sales as follows:
- Medical sales of $3,535,860
- Recreational Sales of $23,157,172
- Total sales in December 2024 of $26,693,032
Total in Great Falls/Cascade County Were Up in December 2024
In Cascade County, the MDHHS data showed that sales were up slightly in Great Falls and the surrounding area for December 2024:
- Adult use sales totaled $1,634,029
- Medical use sales totaled $250,403
- Overall sales totaled $1,884,433
Sales within the county in 2023 totaled $1,801,107.

Cascade County ranks 5th overall in sales within the state of Montana. Yellowstone County, home to the largest city in the state in Billings, leads total sales with nearly $4.6 million dollars in December of 2024.
