Montana Doesn't Shut Down in the Winter, Despite the Rumors

Just because the temperature is beginning to drop across Montana doesn't mean that residents are denning up like a bear.

It's actually the opposite.  Because it means an all-new season of the outdoors, the toys that we use just change a little bit.  Oh, and we dress a lot warmer.  A lot.

Skijoring in the Big Sky Country Is Becoming Bigger and Bigger

The sport of skijoring originated with the Sami people of areas such as Norway or Finland.  Originally using reindeer, it was a means to travel in snowy conditions.  As a sport, it would debut in 1901 at the Nordic Games in Stockholm, Sweden.  In Montana, horses are used for pulling skiers across the snow.

In Montana, the sport has been gaining in popularity steadily.  The Big Sky Skijoring Association was formed in 2018 in Big Sky, Montana to help with bringing events to the state.  Each year, they host the "Best in The West Showdown, bringing in local and out of state competitors.

Think You Could Skijor Through the State of Montana to be the Best?

The annual event in Big Sky is coming on February 7, 8, 9 of 2025.  The excitement has been expanded for the first time this year to three full days of racing and winter fun.  Besides skijoring, fans can watch boarding and snowmobile stunt riders.
