I mean door to door salespeople in your neighborhood ringing the bell.  It seems a lot of them have been hitting my local area quite frequently, hawking alarms, roofing, books and more for sale.

Montana Does Have Specific Laws Regarding Door to Door Sales

Door to door sales across Montana are monitored and there are steps that sellers must take in order to do so.  According to stateregstoday.com, Montana requires that the sellers:

must obtain a license from the Montana Department of Justice Consumer Protection Division. This license is valid for one year and requires the individual to undergo a criminal background check and complete training on consumer rights and laws. Companies must also register with the state and provide proof of insurance. Additionally, certain industries may have additional licensing requirements, such as home improvement contractors who must be registered with the Montana Department of Labor and Industry.

At the current time, Montana does not have any regulations in regard to what type of product an individual can sell door to door.

There are tips to help you spot a fraudulent or deceptive salesperson at your door according to the website:

  • The seller pressures you to sign the contract immediately without giving you time to fully review it.
  • The seller refuses to provide written documentation or a copy of the sales agreement.
  • The seller asks for payment in cash or requires payment upfront before delivering goods or services.
  • The seller makes false claims about products or services, such as exaggerated savings or guaranteed results.
  • The seller does not have proper identification or proof that they are authorized by the company they claim to represent.
  • The price of the product or service is significantly higher than what is typically charged by other providers.
  • The seller uses high-pressure tactics, intimidating language, or refuses to leave when asked.

If you feel like you have been taken advantage of, contact the Montana Department of Justice to file a complaint.
