Sleepless in Montana – Is the Fan in the Window the Culprit?

The hot temperatures of the summer of 2026 in Montana have definitely been putting air conditioners to the test.  Mine has been running pretty much non-stop through it.  The same goes for the fan in my bedroom window for the evening.

But as much as my mind thinks it is doing me good, is that fan causing more trouble than what I realize?  Could my allergy problems be solved by turning the box fan off and dealing with a little heat during the summer or winter?

Allergies have been my bane for years; even as a kid, picking freshly cut and cured hay bales involved a handkerchief and a lot of Benadryl.  As an adult, it's just a complete annoyance.  So, I finally asked my doctor what to do about them.

One of the questions that popped up was whether I used a fan in the window.  Of course I do, doesn't everyone?  But come to find out, that might just be a huge part of the problem, not just with allergies, but also getting a good night's rest.

Reasons Your Fan Will Cause a Poor Night's Sleep - Even with Clean Montana Air

Even if you aren't opening a window and placing a fan in it, you can create conditions that might agitate allergies or worsen your asthma.  Dusty fan blades can add more of the pet dander, pollen and dust to your bedroom air.

A constant fan blowing cooler air on your body can lead to stiff muscles once you finish hitting the snooze button.  Cold air causes muscles to stiffen, and since you are sleeping, you aren't moving.

It might keep the pillow cool, but having a fan blow on your head can pull moisture from your skin and even your eyes.  Eczema, psoriasis and more are all susceptible to a fan.  It can also dry out your mouth, nose and throat.  That stuffy nose or sinuses may be the fan you rely on.
