Montana FWP Offers $1.8 Million in Funds to Habitat Programs
I can readily admit that in the nearly 6 decades that I have been kicking around Big Sky Country, there have definitely been some changes. Some of those major, others slightly smaller or subtle, but still happening across Montana.
Cities across the state have grown, which we need, but it also can lead to humans encroaching upon what makes the state great; those big skies, the scenery, the animals and more. To help restore some of those disturbed habitats, groups across the state band together to do so; but it comes with a pretty steep price tag at times.

Montana FWP Offers $1.8 Million in Funds to Habitat Programs
The Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks Department (MFWP) is offering help to those individuals and groups that hope to make a change for habitat restoration in 2026. That help comes in a simple form - money. Up to $1.8 million in funds for this year.

The "Wildlife Habitat Improvement Program" (WHIP) through the MFWP offers the funds for groups in the state that have "projects that enhance, restore, improve, or rehabilitate wildlife and aquatic habitats across Montana" according to the agency's social media.
How to Apply for Funding with MFWP Wildlife Habitat Improvement Program
The window to apply for funds through the WHIP program is a pretty short one, running now through June 19, 2026. Those that are new to applying must register in WebGrants. Registration is available online here, under "FWP Wildlife Habitat Improvement Program Grant Cycle 2026".
MFWP also announced they would be holding a webinar for those interested about funding their group's project. For further details on the program and the webinar, contact the WHIP Coordinator, Andrew Amidon at andrew.amidon@mt.gov or 406-444-7291.
