Floodgates Will Open June 22 for Popular Glacier Park Roadway
We are all pretty familiar with some of the biggest days that come to Montana. First day of hunting season or maybe school getting started or ending. Those days also involve being able to travel some of our favorite roads that see an abundance of snow during winter.
Scenic byways like the Beartooth Highway are always highly anticipated not just by locals, but tourists as well. One of the largest everyone looks forward to, and dare I say may rival that of hunting season, is the opening of the Going to the Sun Road in Glacier National Park.

Floodgates Will Open June 22 for Popular Glacier Park Roadway
The popular roadway, named for the mountain located near Logan Pass, was built in 1932 and is the only roadway running through the park. The road runs 52 miles from the east entrance at St. Mary and exits the park at the West Glacier exit/entrance.

Besides crossing the Continental Divide at Logan Pass, visitors will also enjoy Lake McDonald Lodge, Apgar Village and of course an abundance of wildlife on the journey. Currently the road is open to Avalanche Creek on the west side of the park. On the east side, the road is open to Jackson Glacier Overlook. However, beginning Monday June 22, 2026, the road will hopefully be fully open.
Announcement Made for "Official" Opening, But Is Weather Dependent in Park
In making the announcement, the National Park Service said that while the official date as of now is Monday, weather conditions are the ultimate gauge as to when the road can be opened to the public.
