We covered a lot of ground back then and I can't ever recall him being worried about happening upon a bear. It wouldn't be until hunting in my later years that I would realize just how important knowing your surroundings and being properly prepared for an encounter can really be.

The Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks (MFWP) in collaboration with the Sun River Watershed Group and Bighorn Wilderness will host a hands-on training and practice seminar in Great Falls on June 24, 2026, at 5:30pm at 206 5th Street South.

In depth training on carrying and using spray will also be covered at the event using inert spray for practice. The event is family friendly and there will be a food truck on hand.
