BFCC Clears Over $1.1 Million In Student Debt For Browning College

Being strapped with a huge debt after college is probably a major concern for those hitting the books after high school; or for adults looking to change careers later in life. But for college students in Browning, Montana at the Blackfeet Community College, many can now breathe a sigh of relief after a major philanthropic donation.

Over $1M in Student Debt at Blackfeet Community College Forgiven

Through social media, the Blackfeet Community College (BFCC) announced in a press release that eligible student debt totaling over $1.1 million had been approved to be forgiven by the BFCC Board of Trustees on August 19, 2026.

The student loan debt forgiveness is being made possible by a generous donation from MacKenzie Scott (Bezos), philanthropist and ex-wife of Jeff Bezos, co-founder of Amazon. The donation had no restrictions on use, meaning the college could use the funds in whatever manner to benefit the school and students at the college.

Debt Automatically Rescinded; Hopes Are That Enrollment May Rise at BFCC

Through the release, the BFCC said that former and current students won't need to fill anything out or file for forgiveness; it will be automatically done for them via the school.

The school hopes that as Fall registration begins on August 24, 2026, students who may have had outstanding debt will be able to return for studies at the college. Officials said that "students who have previously been unable to register because of financial holds or outstanding institutional balances are encouraged to contact BFCC to determine whether they may be eligible for debt forgiveness and to discuss their options for returning this fall."
