Hunting season begins next week on August 15th in Montana for the 900 series.  Soon following will be bowhunting but being prepared begins right now with online classes and an upcoming mandatory field day for youth.

Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks Region Four Hosts Field Day

For Montana bowhunters, opening day for 2025 is set for September 6 with various end dates depending on the type of game being hunted.  A full date description of opening and closing dates can be found here.

Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks Region 4 in Great Falls will be hosting a field day to prepare new hunters for those soon to come opening days.  The field day is a requirement for ages 12-17 and optional for adult hunters.

Pre-registration Required but No Cost to Attend Field Day

Pre-registration for the Field Day on August 26, 2025, is open now and MFWP encourages early signups as there are limited spots available.  There is not cost for students to attend the field day.

State Farm Insurance came out with a list of states with the worst odds of hitting an animal, and Montana came in 2nd. There is a 1 in 44 chance, you will hit an animal while living and driving in Montana. The most common months for this to happen are October, November, and December. If you are traveling through the surrounding states, your odds of hitting a deer don't really get any better. North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Idaho are all considered "high risk" or "medium risk" for the odds of hitting an animal.
