If You Haven't Signed Up Your Child Yet, Now Is the Time for Region 4 Hunters

It won't be long before a certain group of recreationists in Montana will start to turn their heads toward cooler weather instead of innertubes and boating fun.  Hunting season will be upon before you can say "It's Labor Day already?".

For youth bowhunters, that season starts right now with online classes being taken.  And the Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks Region 4 office say that those excited first-time hunters will have just one more chance at a field day to get their license for this fall.

Last Chance Registration for Montana Youth Bowhunters on Now

MFWP has announced the final class before the fall hunting season for those students who have completed the online training.  That class will be held on August 5, 2026, from 5:30pm to 8:30pm.  The class will be held at the FWP field office at Giant Springs in Great Falls.

Students aged 12-17 who wish to attend the field day must first complete the online Hunter Education Course.  Once finished, students must then attend the Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks Bowhunter Education field day in order to receive their license.

What's Expected at MFWP Field Day and How to Make Sure Your Child is Ready

The field day is a free event, but signups are limited and must be made in advance with the Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks.  Students will be required to demonstrate the following to instructors:

• Archery equipment – different types of bows, arrows, tips, etc.
• Archery equipment and tree stand safety
• Hunting ethics – e.g., personal effective shooting range, shot placement
• Blood trailing, tagging an animal, land access, etc.

According to the MFWP, "Instructors will closely evaluate students, and those who cannot demonstrate proficiency in the above topics will not pass and will not be able to hunt until passing a field day in the future."  You can learn more about the bowhunting program for youth here.
