First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park Hosting Event Near Great Falls
Just outside of Great Falls, Montana is the First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park. The park is "one of the largest buffalo jump sites in the country and possibly the largest ever discovered in North America". The area has also been designated a National Historic Landmark.

The State Park Service says the jump area predates Lewis and Clark:
Native peoples used this site for at least a thousand years before Lewis and Clark passed through here. The bison jump site consists of a mile long sandstone cliff; there are remnants of drive lines on top of the cliff and there are up to 18 ft. of compacted buffalo remains below the cliff.

Mammoth Hunt Set to Bring to Life Ancient Hunting Weapons and More
The park is hosting the Mammoth Hunt Weekend on August 9 and 10, 2025, at the park located at 342 Ulm -Vaughn Rd. in Ulm, MT. Hours for the hunt are 10am to 4pm each day. The venue will also have a food truck with traditional Indian Tacos available for purchase.
Featured events during the two-day Mammoth Hunt Weekend include:
- Primitive bows and arrows
- Atlatl with Jim Ray
- Tomahawk throwing
- Flint Knapping
Other traditional skills will be offered for the public to partake in for each of the days. More information is available about the event here.
