How Leave No Trace Came to Be in the U.S. and Montana

The 7 principles of the program were first established in the mid-1980's with the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics.  The group teamed with the U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service and the Bureau of Land Management

To formulate the 7 principles, science played a huge part in the original idea.  According to the National Park Service:

The principles are based on and informed by scientific research in the fields of recreation ecology and human dimensions of natural resources.

For many of us that have grown up using the great outdoors of Montana as our favorite type of recreation, a single mantra has been repeated over and over through the generations:
