This project provides critical access for hunters and anglers and preserves thousands of acres of habitat in northwest Montana. We’ve worked hard with the landowners and local officials to find a solution that provides a win for everyone involved.
Montana's Largest Bighorn Sheep Herd to Benefit in Proposal
Also, part of Phase 2 of the proposal is the Stafford Ferry location near Winifred, Montana. The conservation easement will be in the Missouri River Breaks which is home to the state's largest bighorn sheep herd.
Jason Rhoten, FWP Region 4 supervisor said the land in the Missouri Breaks is crucial for the sheep:
Wild sheep habitat has become increasingly valuable for the conservation of the species. Securing this easement ensures the public can access this incredible area for hunting and recreation.
