Tax Season Is Underway

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has initiated the 2024 tax season and is now accepting and processing federal individual tax returns.

IRS Anticipates Record Filings

The IRS expects over 146 million individual tax returns for the 2023 tax year to be filed by the April 15, 2024, deadline.

Taxpayer Assistance

The IRS is extending service hours in nearly 250 Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TACs) nationwide, offering additional help to taxpayers.

Nearly 250 IRS TACs nationwide will extend their weekly office hours through April 16, offering taxpayers more time for assistance. Special Saturday hours will also be available at many TACs from February through May.

The "Where's My Refund?" tool on IRS.gov provides taxpayers with detailed refund status messages.

Free Tax Assistance and Filing Options

Electronic Filing Options

Taxpayers are encouraged to file electronically for faster refunds. The IRS provides free online and in-person tax preparation options through the IRS Free File program, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE), and MilTax for military members.

Direct File Pilot Program

A new option, the Direct File pilot program, allows eligible taxpayers to file their 2023 federal tax returns online directly with the IRS. This program will be phased in and widely available in mid-March.

Important Reminders for Taxpayers

Sign and Validate Electronically Filed Returns

Taxpayers should keep copies of prior-year tax returns for at least three years. Those using the same tax software as last year won't need to re-enter prior-year information to sign their 2023 tax return electronically.
