Residents of Montana Need to Check This Detector Now
Generally, around this time of year we probably think large scale when it comes to a fire being mentioned. But as temperatures start to fall across Big Sky Country, those fires tend to move indoors.
The need to keep our residence warm and cozy can also lead to some very bad things. Using small heaters is often the leading cause of those fires. But if you take the proper precautions, including having a current and up to date smoke detector can go a long way in keeping you and your family protected.
Fire Prevention Week in the US and Montana Coming in October
According to research by the National Fire Prevention Association, homes that aren't protected by a smoke detector or some sort of fire detection device:
- Roughly three out of five fire deaths happen in homes with either no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.
- More than one-third (38 percent) of home fire deaths result from fires in which no smoke alarms are present.
- The risk of dying in a home fire is cut in half in homes with working smoke alarms.

The National Fire Prevention Week for 2024 is coming October 6-12. This year's theme deals directly with those detectors, being called the "Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work for You". You can find more information about the campaign here.
Make Your Home Safe in Montana, Check Your Smoke Detector Now!
To make sure your home is safe, there are several tips offered by the NFPA that can help keep you up to date:
- Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. Install alarms on every level of the home. Install alarms in the basement.
- It is best to use interconnected smoke alarms so that when one smoke alarm sounds, they all sound.
- Test all smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working.
- A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire.
- Working smoke alarms are an important part of a home fire escape plan.
