
Large Fire Burning in Montana Created by Campfire
It is still hard to fathom that we were covered in snow just a little over a week ago in Central Montana. And yet, here we are, with record high temperatures following it. It's also hard to believe that we are already experiencing even more drought, despite the moisture this month.
That dryness in our state is creating ideal fire conditions also. Great Falls has had several in our immediate area, and there are two current active fires happening between us and Helena, through the picturesque Wolf Creek Canyon.

Across Montana, there are roughly 20 active fires that are being monitored by the Montana Department Natural Resources and Conservation. Most of those are listed as "escaped debris burn" and are smaller in size at the current time.

However, one of the larger fires burning located in Jefferson County, was started by a campfire. The fire, burning northeast of Cardwell, Montana is currently nearing 600 total acres burned. The fire is 100% contained, with an active patrol status monitoring any hotspots or possible blow ups.
Two Fires Causing Smoke and Possible Evacuation Near Great Falls
For anyone traveling between Great Falls and Helena, be aware of two fires that are currently being monitored in the region. The Rattlesnake Fire in Lewis & Clark County, just West of I-15 by Gates of the Mountain Exit is at 87% containment with 47 acres burned. MDNRC stated that:
4 engines are on scene. There is a line around the perimeter, currently in mop up. Stumps are currently burning in the interior, putting up smoke. Expect to see smoke from I-15. Fire personnel are on scene, please do not call 911.
The other fire, burning near Craig, Montana is 50% contained, with nearly 200 acres burned. The Lewis and Clark County Sheriff's Office have evacuations and road closures in place with 9 Engines, 1 tender, 1 Type 1 helicopter, and 2 hand crews on scene.
