Whenever the word hunting was mentioned in our house, it only meant one type of hunting.  Generally white tail or mule deer, with an occasional elk if someone in the family got lucky and drew a permit for the Highwood Mountains of Montana.

The word bird was never associated with hunting for me.  Perhaps if there were more opportunities like that of Great Falls, Montana area kids with the local chapter of Pheasants Forever Golden Triangle Chapter that would have been different.

Annual Youth Hunt Day with Great Falls Pheasants Forever Upcoming

For Great Falls and the area young hunters wanting to learn more about bird hunting, the Great Falls Chapter of Pheasant Forever are set to host the 8th Annual Youth Hunt Day in collaboration with several area groups.

Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks, Golden Trial Sporting Dog Club and Scheels along with the Golden Triangle Chapter will hold the class on September 19, 2026.  The day begins with learning about upland birds, hunting safety, and hunters have a chance to practice their shotgun skills under the guidance of instructors.

Hitting the Field with Their New Knowledge, Valued Companion and Instructor

Youth hunters will then hit the field with a dog handler and hunting mentor to apply their new knowledge and hopefully come home with pheasant for dinner that night.

Participants will receive a certificate from the day and a 1-year membership to Pheasants Forever.  The group encourages youth to bring their own gun they are comfortable with; the group will have shotguns and ammo on hand for those that don't.  Learn more about the program or sign up here.
