Finding ways to cut corners in my home budget isn't going as well as it looked on paper a few months ago.

Not that we aren't seeing a few bucks trickle back into the bank account, it just seems like it isn't nearly as much as we had hoped to cover other rising costs.

Power Outlets Are Costing You Big Montana Homeowners

In diving down rabbit holes of the internet, you can find some pretty crazy ways to "save" money that might not be exactly practical to a "normal" application.  For instance, you probably aren't setting up a windmill or solar farm any time soon.

But I did find a list that had a particular tip within it from Finance Buzz that really got me thinking.  It even motivated me to wander my house and check to see just how many of these things were being used in my home.  Every.  Single.  Outlet.  Full.

Extra Tips for Saving Money in Your Home in Montana

Yep.  All those things plugged in that aren't in use are drawing power and cash out of your pocket.  It is estimated by the Department of Energy that the average home is wasting $100-$200 per year for those items.

With today being so technology driven, it's easy to see how these add up quickly.  Laptops, desktops, multiple televisions, phones, tablets, phew!  It's endless.

And that is just electronics.  What about all the other things you have going?  Incense burners, lights, shavers and appliances.  It may pay to take a trip around your home and find those "power vampires".

Other tips I found useful included:

  • Compare your car insurance rates from time to time
  • Try to compare prices if possible
  • Keeping up on bills, avoiding late fees
  • Make a shopping list
