New Way to Grab a Hunting/Fishing License in Montana

MFWP last week announced the new system, called "License Ambassadors" will take effect in Montana on March 1, 2026.  The new program teams MFWP with local businesses across the state that want to offer licenses to customers but haven't been able to in the past.

The new system will "allow more retailers to offer licensing services without the need for specialized, outdated hardware" by moving to a more "modern, web-based system".  In making the announcement, FWP Director Christy Clark said:

This change will ultimately provide more businesses where hunters and anglers who like to buy or apply for licenses in person, can go for help.

Since late 2025, the MFWP have been helping existing businesses with outdated equipment transition to the new program.  Businesses will receive a "License Ambassador Kit" that will include:

  • signage options
  • regulations
  • information for customers
  • allow License Ambassadors to promote this additional customer service

MFWP Licensing Bureau Chief Emily Cooper said it was a necessary change.  "This change is necessary because we are simply unable to keep the old system going with outdated license provider equipment that we can’t fix when it breaks or replace when it’s unusable".  For more information, check the MFWP website here.
