When any of us head out the door for the daily work grind, getting hurt while doing it is way down the list of things to accomplish in the day.  But accidents do happen, every day in the workplace, regardless of what profession you have chosen.

In Montana, you may lean toward thinking that the outdoors would lead in the dangerous job category.  Agriculture, forestry or even utilities should be at the top of our list, right?  Surprisingly, thought, they aren't close.

The Most Dangerous Job in Montana Isn't What You Think

It isn't that ranching, farming or general outdoor work isn't dangerous, it is.  Weather, equipment failure, unpredictable animals, or massive machinery have always been at the top of death rates in the work force of Montana.

But, according to the Montana Department of Labor and Industry (MDLI), they aren't the ones that have the most claims within the state for the past year statistics in 2024.

Incredibly, agriculture related injury claims don't even make the top 10 of the lists by MDLI.  Ag, forestry, hunting and fishing are way down at #13.  Mining and utilities fall even further down.  Only 3 careers that involve being out in Big Sky Country are on the top 10, including:

  • Contruction #4
  • Manufacturing #7
  • Transportation/Warehouse #9
