For a while there, it felt like you couldn't escape stories about how popular Montana had become.

It seemed like every other article was about people moving here and how the state was being overrun by outsiders. These days, though, the story is a little different.

New Census Data Shows Montana Growth Is Slowing

It's not hard to understand why Montana became such a popular destination. We've got wide-open spaces, incredible scenery, and a slower pace of life that a lot of people were looking for.

For years, those perks came at the cost of lower wages. Then remote work changed everything. Suddenly, people could keep their big-city jobs while living wherever they wanted.

Montana is still growing, but the population boom we saw after COVID has definitely cooled off.

A new report from the U.S. Census Bureau shows which Montana communities are still adding residents and which ones are losing population.

It probably won't surprise you to see places like Kalispell and Belgrade near the top. Both have grown by nearly 25% over the past six years and continued that growth in 2025

What's more interesting are some of the smaller communities making a comeback. Several towns that had been losing residents are now growing again, including one that, not that long ago, was the fastest-shrinking town in Montana.
