Here Are the Latest Hunting Numbers for Central Montana
The general rifle season continues in Montana for a couple more weeks, but so far, numbers appear to be down for the amount of people that are heading into the woods.
That doesn't mean that those hunters that are hitting the trails and mountains aren't finding game though.
Game Station for Central Montana Region 4 in Augusta
Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks reports that in region 4 of Central Montana hunter numbers have been lagging behind. Through the 4th weekend of hunting in the area, there have been "just over 1,600 hunters have come through Montana Fish, Wildlife & Park’s check station in Augusta, which is approximately 10 percent below the recent average."

Despite less hunters so far this year, game harvest has been above average within the region. So far, approximately 27 percent of hunters reported having harvested deer and elk.
Total Number Harvested in Central Montana So Far in 2024
As for totals of game harvested this year, MWFP region 4 states that "A total of 434 deer and elk have been brought through the check station this season, which is approximately 10 percent above recent average and 11 percent above last year at this time."

Individual numbers per species harvested this year include:
- 132 Elk
- 144 Mule Deer
- 166 Whitetail Deer
- 11 Antelope
- 2 Bighorn Sheep
- 1 Moose
- 1 Mountain Goat
