New Disease Targeting Upland Game Birds in Montana
It was only a few years ago that hunters started to learn about Chronic Wasting Disease in large game animals, specifically deer. Hunters have had to keep a better check on their venison to avoid eating diseased meat.

It now appears that we have another disease invading our native wildlife population and the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks along with the Montana State University are asking for help from bird hunters across Montana.
What to Look for While Hunting Upland Game Birds in Montana
Through a social media post, the Big Sky Upland Bird Association has been requested by Dr. Lance McNew of Montana State University for vigilance by hunters to be aware of a new disease affecting the eyes of upland game birds.

Bird hunters are being asked to exam fresh (warm) kills of upland game birds shot in Montana this season for eye worms. To inspect the bird, hunters should "Just squeeze the edges of an open eye, but not so hard as to rupture it."
How Hunters in Montana Can Report This New Bird Disease to Authorities
For hunters, the Big Sky Upland Game Bird Association asks that:
If you find these little white thready worms, note the county you shot it at, and please send in your observation.
So far in responses to the social media post, affected birds have been reported in Fergus and Toole counties so far. As of now, it is believed that it is safe to eat your taken birds, even if affected with eye worms.
