Dig Out Your Poodle Skirt for This Fundraiser in Great Falls
It's funny how certain changes over the years have affected different types of activities in our lives. For instance, our shoes. They weren't always the nice, rubber-soled tennis shoes we are used to today, and they could be death to floors. Scuff marks, scrapes and more were all attributed to shoes.
While that leap forward in technology saved a lot of headaches for janitors, especially in schools, it also brought about the end of a favorite past time at those schools. A past time that would get its name from those same shoes.
Time to Dig in the Attic and Closets of The Homes of Great Falls
First recordings of dance events labeled as "sock hops" came about in the mid-1940's but weren't really popularized until the 1950's as rock and roll music became more mainstream. The reason behind the name was simple; you weren't allowed to wear those hard-soled shoes on the gymnasium or cafeteria floors.
Once better soled shoes were introduced, this style of dances eventually faded away, but didn't go completely by the wayside. Sock hops are still held at many schools across the country, and many are used as fundraising events for various programs and charities.
