Growing up on a ranch near Geyser, Montana, I think we had quite a few of the common livestock that people expect you to own.  Cattle, horses and chickens were commonplace at our home.

Heck, we even had pigs and rabbits at one point in my youth.  But never a sheep.  It makes me think I missed out on a rite of passage as a kid.  Mutton busting is returning to the Electric City, and I am kind of jealous of those that will get to compete at Montana State Fair.

Big Sky Pro Rodeo Action Includes Mutton Busting at Montana State Fair

The first Big Sky Pro Rodeo happened in 1931 at the Northern Montana Fair, which would later become the Montana State Fair in Great Falls, Montana.  Over the years, various events have come and gone, but mutton busting continues to entertain families and offer a glimpse of the sport to youngsters.

The art of riding a sheep or "mutton busting" in the Montana State Fair is up for grabs to 30 lucky kids this year.  Rodeo action will be at the Grandstands of the Fairgrounds from July 30 through August 2, 2025.

How To Sign Up Your Rider for the Mutton Busting with BSPR

To compete in this year's riding, children must be between the ages of 5 and 7 years as of 8/3/25.  Children must also weigh less than 80 pounds and sign up in person with a parent.

Signups begin on July 1st, 2025, at Ace Hardware locations in Great Falls and kids and parents can register until July 16th.  30 children will be chosen from the entries received to mutton bust during the Montana State Fair.  Find out more about Big Sky Pro Rodeo here.
