Great Falls Can Do Better. But We Don't Seem to Be Gaining Anything
If you believe in statistics, and honestly, it really is tough to argue numbers, you and I probably wouldn't ever leave our homes. Maybe venturing out occasionally to the yard to avoid a visit from the city about the weeds growing everywhere.
Crime in Montana isn't a joke. And crime in our city, Great Falls, is most certainly not a joke when you start to look into the numbers that are associated with the less savory characters who inhabit the area.
What the Statistics Do Say About Great Falls and Our Area

In data from neighborhoodscout.com, Great Falls isn't the safest of areas to live when you look at the numbers:
- Crime rate of 50 per 1000 residents
- One of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes from the smallest towns to the very largest cities
- Becoming a victim of either violent or property crime is one in 20

For myself, this was one of the more enlightening, i.e. scary stats that are listed:
From our analysis, we discovered that violent crime in Great Falls occurs at a rate higher than in most communities of all population sizes in America. The chance that a person will become a victim of a violent crime in Great Falls, such as armed robbery, aggravated assault, rape or murder; is 1 in 201. This equates to a rate of 5 per one thousand inhabitants.

While the above information may seem like I am taking a shot at our city, I promise you, it isn't. I love our town. Always have. But that doesn't mean that we can't do better about being more aware of crime in our own yard, neighborhoods, city and county.
