Montana Highway Patrol K9's Make Big Busts in 2024

Spoiler alert, drugs are bad, mmmkay.

In Montana, it seems that the drug problem bubbles just under the surface of being important.  We all know they are here; communities are struggling daily to combat the problem.  K9 units are here to help those problems in our state.

Law enforcement have many different types of weapons to stave off drugs in our communities, and Montana Highway Patrol is using a very one to keep drugs at bay.

K9 Units Making a Huge Difference in Combating Drugs in Montana

The MHP has several drug-sniffing dogs that are on active patrol within the ranks.

When designating new K9's for detecting drugs in 2021, AG Austin Knudsen said that:

The dogs and training law enforcement agencies obtain through this program will play an integral role in helping us keep drugs out of our communities and improving public safety statewide

The program is another tool from the box that law enforcement is able to use to help keep our state safe.

Big Bust Numbers for K9 Units in Montana in 2024 - See the Results

The results of the program for 2024 are just now being released by the Montana Highway Patrol:

  • Fentanyl pills: 105,833
  • Fentanyl powder: 115 grams
  • Meth: 49.4 pounds
  • Cocaine: 9.6 pounds
  • Money: $216,429
  • Guns: 21

As of now the MHP currently have three K9's certified to detect fentanyl odor within the agency.  With the success of the K9 units in 2024, MHP is looking to expand fentanyl training within the unit this year.
