Montana City Trees Easily Identified with New Interactive Map
Have you ever been looking out a picture window or sitting enjoying coffee and wondered what kind of tree or trees are in your yard? Certain species can be difficult to tell apart unless you are an amateur arborist or forester.
A new map is being offered by the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (MDNRC) that can help not only you but will also be beneficial to city planners looking to replace damaged or diseased trees.

Statewide Urban Tree Inventory is in 74 Montana Towns with More Coming Soon
The new interactive map from the MDNRC focuses on users being able to identify tree species, sizes, and locations in 74 Montana towns. The data compiled is up to date as of the end of 2024.

The MDNRC will continue to update the map annually, including adding more towns once mapping is done in 2025.
Montana City Foresters and Planners Benefit Also
A key feature of the new interactive map is that it will allow cities to identify problem areas, where to plant or remove and even offer "strategic approaches to tree maintenance".
The MDNRC stated through a release via social media that the map would help communities in the following way:
knowledge empowers communities to develop management strategies that protect their urban forests while enhancing the overall livability of their neighborhoods.
