Many Montana People Do This, But Is It Legal?
Just because you can, doesn't always mean you can. Or should. However, in this case, you really can and not need to be worried about getting busted for it. Sort of. As long as you follow the law. Kinda.
Flying the flag is tradition. But what about different places that you fly that flag? Could you be fined or ticketed for flying Old Glory in the back of a pickup truck? Or your motorcycle?
Flying It High and Flying It Proud Across Montana
Well, your short answer is no, that it isn't illegal to fly the Stars and Stripes proudly in the back of the bed of a pickup truck. Or on your motorcycle even. However, there are some instances where doing so could have you getting a visit from your local patrol person.
There also is the possibility that the venue or event may limit what can be displayed. Make sure to check specifically when attending those events.
How To Stay in the Safe Zone and Still Fly It Proudly
Depending on the size of flag you choose to wave, there are a few limitations to what you can have in your rig. For example, a common law is that anything hanging 4ft or more over your tailgate must be flagged. Some laws even require that you aren't any taller than 14ft with your rig.
Know The Laws! What You Can Do With Old Glory
Factors to flying your flag in the bed of your truck include:
- Make sure it is secure. You don't want it flying off at highway speeds.
- Don't block your windows. Whether it is the front, sides, back window or even your mirrors, make sure you can use them all safely.
- Treat the flag with respect. If it becomes tattered or soiled, make sure you dispose of it properly.
