
Hikers Sustain Injuries from Bear Near Old Faithful in Yellowstone
It has only been two weeks since the opening of the Yellowstone National Park entrances for the tourist season, and there has already been a scary incident involving hikers and bears within the park.
The encounter happened near one of the most popular destinations of the park, the site of the Old Faithful geyser. National Park officials said that two people hiking a trail were involved, and perhaps multiple bears were also present.

According to the release from the National Park Service, two hikers were on the Mystic Falls hiking trail when they encountered at least one bear, perhaps more on the afternoon of May 4, 2026.

Both hikers were injured during the encounter; National Park personnel responded to the area, and it remains under investigation by the agency. No further information from Park Service has been released about the incident.
First Attack in 2026, Several Areas Now Closed During Investigation in Park
Yellowstone National Park stated that this is the first attack within the park for 2026. The last occurred in September of 2025. The last fatal attack of a bear in Yellowstone was in 2015. That attack was near the Lake Village area in the park.
Park officials have announced several area closures while the investigation into the attack continues. Those areas are outlined in the graph below.
