But if you went the traditional route of a "live" Christmas tree for your holiday, what should you do with it once you are ready to dispose of it?  Instead of just discarding it to the trash, you could recycle it at one of two convenient locations in Great Falls beginning on December 26, 2025.

How to Recycle Your Christmas Tree in Great Falls

Live trees used during the holidays are biodegradable, meaning they can be recycled and used in several different ways.  Various uses include composting and creating fish habitats across the area.

The recycling program is in conjunction with the City of Great Falls, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks and the Great Falls Chapter of Walleyes Unlimited.  Residents in Great Falls can drop off trees beginning the day after Christmas up until January 9, 2026.  There are two locations to drop trees off at:

  • Meadowlark Park – at Fox Farm and Park Garden Road
  • American Little League (parking lot) – 1100 38th St N

Some Rules to Remember When Recycling Your Tree in Great Falls

Before loading your tree up and heading to one of the recycling locations, make sure that the tree:

  • Remove all lights and decorations
  • Remove any tree stands
  • Flocked trees are not accepted
  • Only "live" trees should be put into containers
  • Commercial trees will not be accepted
