As soon as the summer heat begins to wane in Montana and those colder temperatures start, I often find myself being inside my home rather in the backyard more and more often.

That also means that my dogs aren't outside as much either.  Now, I have a large house; but herding dogs need more than just a couple of floors to terrorize.  Which means still getting out daily for a walk with them, even in colder times.

Keeping Your Pet Active in Fall in Montana - Two Walks a Day

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), dog owners should be getting their pet out to walk at least twice a day.  But the question then becomes for just how long should that jaunt around the neighborhood last?  This is where it gets a little tricky or even confusing.

That amount is based on three factors for your dog:

  • Age
  • Health
  • Breed

For puppies, the AKC recommends first being sure your dog is comfortable with a leash and try to keep walks limited to 10 minutes to begin.  You may also find more than twice is needed; for the first few weeks, stick to short and frequent walks.

Active Breeds and Older Dogs - When and How Often Should They Be Walked?

For adult dogs, begin with 15-20 minutes of exercise if they aren't currently active.  You can gradually increase the time, depending on how your dog responds.  Active breeds like mine, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, can benefit from longer walks to tire them for a little calmer (?) household.

Senior dogs get a huge benefit from daily walks including keeping their minds active by new scents, sounds and sights.  Be sure to monitor your pet for any soreness or limping and consult your veterinarian with any concerns.  You can learn more here.
