For the uninitiated, there are certain driving laws that, well, quite frankly, get thrown out with the bath water.  Honestly, they are really more like guidelines than necessarily laws.  And growing up in it, you just come to expect grain trucks in the middle of the road.  Or a horse trailer.

But one town not far from Great Falls, Montana is putting their foot on the brakes on some of the more blatant disregard for driving within a city or even a small town like that of Fairfield.  And new laws within the city are hoping to break those bad habits of drivers.

Heads Up for Traveling Through Fairfield with New Traffic Laws

The farming and ranching community of Fairfield in Montana has announced new amendments to city driving codes that they hope will help with flow and keeping the public safe.  The new ordinances are for two specific instances the Town Council say are causing problems.

The first new ordinance involves the area of Central Avenue and 7th Street in Fairfield, and people making "U-turns" at the specific intersection.  The new law now states that you may not make a left-hand turn from the right lane across the left lane of traffic.

Exceptions to this new law include:

  • You are at an intersection
  • You are turning into a parking lot
  • You are turning into a residential driveway

2nd New Law and Ordinance Deals with Backing Up on Fairfield, MT Streets

The second new ordinance taking effect deals with vehicles and drivers that may find the need to back across streets within the small town.  The new law states that drivers are strictly prohibited from backing from one side of the street curb (either side) across traffic to the other side.

Fines for those that offend include $75 for the first offense and $100 for the second and subsequent violations.  The Fairfield Town Council said that the Sheriff's Office would be actively enforcing these new laws immediately.  For more information, see the press release here.
