The allure of live music, the electrifying atmosphere, and the shared passion for artists' performances have long made concerts a cherished pastime for millions around the world. However, in recent years, the fear of random shootings has cast a somber shadow over the joyous gatherings, causing anxiety and hesitation among concert-goers, including myself.

Recently here in Great Falls at an outdoor gathering for the 4tth of July celebration, I had a gentleman ask me about the man I was standing next to and if I knew him.  The man was my Morning Show partner and was running back to his rig to grab his phone.  The gentleman was happy to hear that I knew the man and thanked me for clearing things up.  He had watched JD set a large briefcase up against the building that was directly behind the sidewalk that everyone was gathered on.  He just so happens to be an off duty fireman, and after noticing JD leave the case behind, he decided that this was something that needed attention.  This caught me off guard, until it clicked.  This off duty fireman had noticed something that most of us would never even see, to ensure our safety.

Weather we know this or not, this happens at every single event we attend.  There have been safety discussions prior to events, event staff watching for our safety, and then the ones who are off duty, still making sure we are safe.  Thank you.

Then just last weekend I went to a 3 day music festival in Montana that brought in a crowd of 30,000 people.  Concert shootings ran through my head a few times over the 3 day weekend, as I was there with my husband, both my adult boys and my oldest sons girlfriend.  The kids are 21 - 23 and were having a blast.  I had to ask if they were ever worried about their safety and random mass shootings.  They replied quickly with a yes, and said it is always on the back of their mind at every large event they attend.  I was not expecting a response like that and it makes me sad to think that this is a normal concern for the younger generation.  You might get shot.

Impact on Concert-Goers and Society

The fear of random shootings at concerts has significant consequences for both individuals and society as a whole. On a personal level, this restricts people from enjoying the experiences that concerts offer. This deprives individuals of a sense of belonging, emotional release, and shared connections with like-minded fans. Furthermore, artists and the music industry suffer as attendance drops due to security concerns, leading to financial losses and a decline in live music culture.

On a broader societal scale, the fear affects the public spaces that were once regarded as safe havens for art and expression lose their sense of freedom and spontaneity. Such fear-driven cultural changes can lead to the erosion of community bonds, as people become increasingly isolated from shared experiences.

Addressing the Fear: Concert Security Measures

While the fear of random shootings is valid, it is essential to recognize that most concert events prioritize safety through rigorous security measures. Concert organizers, venues, and law enforcement agencies work tirelessly to ensure the safety of attendees. Some common security practices include:

  1. Bag Inspections: Concert-goers are often required to undergo bag checks at entry points to prevent the introduction of prohibited items.
  2. Metal Detectors: Many venues employ metal detectors to detect concealed weapons, thus acting as a deterrent to potential threats.
  3. Visible Security Presence: Increased security personnel and law enforcement visibility can help reassure attendees and deter potential attackers.
  4. Surveillance Systems: Sophisticated surveillance technology aids in monitoring the venue and identifying suspicious activities.
  5. Emergency Response Plans: Concert organizers should have well-defined emergency response plans in place to handle any potential threats swiftly and efficiently.

Overcoming the Fear: Empowering Concert-Goers

While it is natural to feel anxious about attending concerts, empowering concert-goers with knowledge and self-awareness can help in alleviating their fears. Here are some tips:

  1. Stay Informed: Stay updated with news about security measures and protocols implemented by concert organizers. Understanding the efforts made to ensure safety can boost confidence.
  2. Buddy System: Attend concerts with friends or family, as being in a group provides a sense of security and support.
  3. Report Suspicious Behavior: If you notice anything unusual or suspicious at a concert, report it to security personnel immediately.
  4. Choose Seating Wisely: Opt for seats near exits or aisles, which can provide a quick exit route if needed.
  5. Practice Mindfulness: Practice mindfulness techniques such as deep breathing and focusing on the music to reduce anxiety during the event.

The fear of random shootings at concerts is an unfortunate reality in today's world, but it should not rob us of the joy and beauty that live music brings. By understanding the security measures in place and empowering ourselves with knowledge, we can overcome this fear and reclaim the magic of concerts. Let us not allow fear to dictate our lives, for music has the power to heal, unite, and uplift, even in the face of adversity.
