Growing up with a mechanically inclined father, I was taught taking care of your rig would mean years of service back to you. And that included weekly washings of my '70 Ford F-100 pickup each weekend before hitting the road.
It also taught me where to not park that truck as to avoid the dreaded payload of a bird that happened to be hanging out on a power line or telephone pole above it. We've all had it happen to us, however. But there is a trick to helping to avoid those bombs from above on your cherished ride.

It turns out that birds actually do have a preference when it comes time to start dropping payloads on unsuspecting vehicles. Birds see ultraviolet light; certain colors will pop out to them more than others. Cars that are brown, red or black are going to be hit more than a white, silver or grey colored vehicle.

To add to the messy mayhem, reflective surfaces such as chrome can make things even worse. Even mirrors can make birds mistake their own reflection for a rival which can lead to them going on the offensive and leaving a small (or large) gift on your paint.

A survey by the carport and garage company Alan's Factory Outlet revealed that vehicle owners will spend around $500 dollars to try and do battle with birds targeting their car. Easy to imagine when some car wash facilities charge between $20-$30 for a single wash.
If you do own a vehicle that seems to get hit a little more often that you would like, there are some simple, common tips to help:
- Watch where you park - stay away from power lines or under trees where birds can roost and leave a surprise
- Some sort of covered parking - garage, carport, lean to
- Purchase a car cover
