Best One Day Scenic Drives from Great Falls

A long weekend is coming up, and even though Mother Nature is trying to dampen the festivities with rain forecast, it doesn't mean you can't get out and enjoy some of the scenic parts of the state.

Loading the cooler with drinks and some snacks, there are multitudes of highways, secondary and gravel roads that feature some of the most beautiful country out there.  Let's grab a GPS unit though, just in case!

In the internet age, information is merely a click or keystroke away.  And in this case, it indeed provided some great answers for a simple question that was posted on social media.

The question?

"Are there any good scenic drives from Great falls in one day?  Preferably one that can take us around the mountains."

Contributors to the question had some great ideas for the poster, with routes completely surrounding the central Montana and Great Falls area.

Grab the Family and the Pets, Time to Head Out from Great Falls

You can cover a lot of miles in a day.  I've made the trek from Great Falls through Glacier to Missoula and home a few times, but it is hurried to say the least.  So, let's try to keep it simple for this day drive from the Electric City.

Here are five great drives from Great Falls to our surrounding area that will leave enough time to enjoy a few sights and grab something to eat along the way.

1. Great Falls to Helena via the frontage road access
2. Great Falls to Fort Benton via Highwood route
3. Great Falls to Augusta and Lincoln
4. Great Falls to White Sulphur Springs, Townsend and Helena

That 5th one?  It is my own personal favorite for a quick day trip from Great Falls.  Traveling the back road to Belt and heading towards Thane Creek Campground, you can cross the creek 5 different times, stop for a campfire lunch, maybe a cold one in Geyser and back to home by dark!
