In case you missed it last week, meteorological winter came in mostly like a lamb on December 1st.  Coming next week will be the astrological start of winter on December 21st.  As the realization of winter finally being here hits, it brings with it the sadness of not seeing color in our yards or homes in the form of flowers or plants.

It doesn't have to be that way though.  You can help get rid of some of those winter doldrums with flowers that will brighten any room as they bloom through the holidays and towards springtime in Montana.

Locking In Those Colors - What Are Some of the Best?

Leave it to my go-to lady (besides my wife) to give me some great ideas for making it a little more bearable during winter.  Martha Stewart can offer some great tips for making your home, well, homier.

Here are ten of my favorites suggested by her that I love seeing in a home. Especially my own!

There are 3 different types of these plants including Christmas.  Easter and Thanksgiving are the other two.

With proper care, the African Violet can bloom year-round, and last several weeks each time.

For pops of color, the moth orchid can offer pink, purple, red, orange, yellow, and more.  Another bonus is they are great for the beginning home plant grower and the blooms can last for months at a time.

Once bloomed, did you know that you can make these bloom again?  By placing them in dark conditions for 12 weeks, you can bring them back out to begin care again.

This holiday favorite can be brought back year after year with proper care and light management.

Not just a beautiful flower to gaze upon in your home in a pot, this is also a wonderful flower to use in a cut flower display.

With clusters of red, yellow, and orange, the clivia will bloom for several weeks during winter months.

More commonly known as a shamrock, the oxalis is capable of blooming several times during winter months, and can even be managed to bloom when you want it to.

These blooms offer many different colors, including red, purple, white, and more.

With enough light, fertilizer, and moisture, these plants can bloom continuously throughout the year.
