As a resident of Montana, I've traveled through Yellowstone National Park many times over the years.  But as the saying goes, "never have I ever" been through the park during the winter.  For as rugged as it is during the summer months, I can't imagine it during the blizzard season.

But for many, winter is the perfect time to visit the park.  And for those that love cruising through the scenery on a snowmobile, the opportunity to score one of the highly sought after lottery permits allowing recreationists to snowmobile in Yellowstone National Park without a commercial guide is coming up soon.

Annual Lottery for Snowmobilers in Yellowstone Park Coming Soon

Since 2013 recreational snowmobilers have had the chance at a lottery through the Non-Commercially Guided Snowmobile Program.  A successful draw allows the "holders to enter the park for up to three days with a group of up to five snowmobilers."

Successful permit holders must also complete an online Yellowstone Snowmobile Education Certification Program, be 18 years of age at the time of the trip and also must possess a valid state-issued driver's license.  Snowmobiles must also meet the park’s New Best Available Technology standard.

Lottery Application Dates for Yellowstone National Park and How to Apply

For 2026, lottery application dates will run from August 1st to August 31st.  Those that are successful in receiving a permit will be notified in early September.  You can apply for your permit here when it becomes available.

The park service also added that unclaimed or canceled permits will be made available to the public on a first come, first serve basis.  There is no waiting list for the permits and the opening day to grab one begins on October 1st, 2026.  You can learn more about planning your Yellowstone National Park winter vacation here.
