Do You Know the Difference Between Memorial Day and Veterans Day in Montana?

On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month it all came to an end.  In 1918, World War I ended on that day, and it would be one year later that then President Woodrow Wilson would proclaim it to be "Armistice Day".

In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower would change that name to what we currently use, Veterans Day.  After conflicts with World War II and the Korean war, he stated that, "I have today signed a proclamation calling upon all of our citizens to observe Thursday, November 11, 1954, as Veterans Day. It is my earnest hope that all veterans, their organizations, and the entire citizenry will join hands to insure [sic] proper and widespread observance of this day."

The Difference Between the Two Holidays

Confusion sometimes arises when celebrating Veterans Day, often being compared to the Memorial Day holiday in May.  While similar, Memorial Day honors service members who died in service to their country or as a result of injuries incurred during battle.

Veterans Day is set aside to thank and honor living veterans who served honorably in the military, whether in wartime or peacetime.
