I know that the world is an everchanging place. That change effects everything and everyone. Change can also come at a price of longstanding traditions many grew up with. And maybe still adhere to in some form.
It may seem odd to combine how to start a fire and put up a tent in the wild with something in the cyberworld. But kids today are able to do just that, with a new set of merit badges announced by Scouting America.

Montana Scouts of America Kids Can Now Step into the Digital Age
Scouting has always been about preparing young people for the future. Scouts have been able to earn badges that encompass everything from fishing to learning how to fingerprint someone.
The high-tech, digital age is now part of that future for the younger generation.

The high-tech, digital age is now part of that future for the younger generation, and the organization has announced new merit badges that will help in:
leading the charge in preparing youth for tomorrow’s world. As technology reshapes how we live, learn and connect, Scouting empowers young people to become creators, innovators and responsible digital citizens.
President and CEO of Scouting America Roger Krone stated that the badges will equip Scouts with:
skills that unlock career opportunities, foster digital citizenship and cultivate curiosity about how the world works, online and offline.
Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity the Main Focus for Youth Badges
Scouts should be prepared when seeking out these new badges. The descriptions for each of them via Scouting America are as follows:
- Artificial Intelligence (AI) Merit Badge: The new AI Merit Badge gives Scouts a hands-on introduction to one of today’s most transformative technologies. Scouts discover what AI is, how it is used in everyday life and learn the basics of algorithms and automation. They also tackle real-world challenges such as spotting deepfakes, understanding algorithmic bias and exploring how AI is impacting jobs and society. Beyond technical skills, the badge emphasizes critical thinking about the ethical questions surrounding AI, including data privacy and responsible innovation.
- Cybersecurity Merit Badge: The Cybersecurity Merit Badge gives Scouts a comprehensive introduction to digital security, preparing them to face the challenges of today’s connected world. Scouts learn to identify a range of cyber threats, from viruses to social engineering attacks, and recognize common vulnerabilities in systems and applications. They develop practical skills such as creating strong passwords, using firewalls and antivirus software and understanding encryption. The badge also highlights responsible online behavior, teaching Scouts how to safeguard personal information and prevent cyberbullying.
