As one of the jewels in the crown of Great Falls, Montana, the River's Edge Trail is popular with a variety of recreational opportunities for residents in the city. But that also means that it gets used. A lot.
If you are a frequent user of the trail, get those steps, runs or bicycle rides in now. One of the most popular sections will be temporarily closed to the public for repairs on a frequently used bridge of the trail.

Section of Great Falls Rivers Edge Trail to Close Temporarily
After 30 years of service on the River's Edge Trail, the Great Falls Park and Recreation Department says the historic "Kings Bridge" is need of repairs and improvements. The new work will begin on Monday September 14, 2026 in the area.

The closure of the trail will involve the "section of the River’s Edge Trail from the Caboose Trailhead to Giant Springs Road" as the bridge is re-decked by workers. During the closure, Park and Recreation asks that the public not enter the area or use the bridge for obvious safety reasons.
Other Areas of Rivers Edge Trail Still Open to Enjoy During Temporary Closure
The department didn't give an exact timeline as to when the project may finish and the section of trail reopened for the public simply stating that the "trail will reopen as soon as construction is safely completed."
There is still plenty of the trail to enjoy during the construction at Kings Bridge. The River's Edge Trail features over 60 miles of trail on both sides of the Missouri River in Great Falls. Learn more about the trail and the foundation here.
