Popular Coffee Brand Makes Major Change in Montana
When looking over the big picture of coffee, there is a major chain that probably pops into your head immediately. And rightfully so. Starbucks are everywhere. Stand-alone shops and even in our grocery stores.
One of the enticing parts of those shops was the ability to hang out without having to purchase a product from the menu. Need a meeting location or hook into the internet? Starbucks was there. But that policy is suddenly gone as of January 13th, 2025.
You Can Loiter in Stores in Montana, But You Better Buy Something to Do So.
In 2018 Starbucks instituted a sort of "open-door" policy allowing people to hang out at the stores. Without buying anything. You could even use the restrooms. It worked well for anyone needing a meeting area, or a place to check your email or surf the net.

Not anymore. In a total reversal of policy in a release to the public, the Seattle-based company announced that in order to use those amenities, a person must be an actual paying customer.

Announcement Comes with a Warning for Customers in Montana and US
In making the policy change, the announcement also had a stern warning for those choosing not to adhere to the rules:
We will ask anyone not following this code of conduct to leave the store and may ask for help from law enforcement.

Yikes! Starbucks also reiterated the following code of conduct policy in all Montana and US stores:
- No misuse or disruption of our spaces
- No discrimination or harassment
- No violence or abusive/threatening language
- No consuming outside alcohol
- No smoking/vaping or drug use
- No panhandling
