How Much Did Montana Make in Alcohol Taxes Last Year?
It would appear that although many people over the last year were tightening their belts to afford things, there was still a few dollars left in the budget to enjoy a cold one after work or during a weekend of fun.
Montana alcohol consumption rose despite a downward trend across the country that shows the opposite. Those sales also mean an increase in the state coffers, to the tune of millions of tax dollars.
Montana Liquor Sales Have Steadily Increased Since 2020
In Montana, from fiscal years 2020-2024 the state has seen an increase in overall gross liquor sales jump by nearly 50 million dollars. Total sales in year 2020 were $163,800,000 but in 2024 those numbers rose to $211,700,000.

"In fiscal year 2024 the Alcoholic Beverage Control Division collected $227.2 million for the sale of distilled spirits, alcoholic taxes and licensing functions" according to the Montana Department of Revenue.

Where Alcohol Taxes are Spent in the State of Montana
The state of Montana allocated approximately $60.9 million dollars to the General State Fund and the Special Revenue Fund receives approximately $12.6 million dollars. According to Operations Analyst Steve Swanson:
The sale of liquor in the state of Montana generates a substantial amount of revenue from taxes and markup. The majority of this revenue is transferred to the state’s general fund, and a portion is specifically designated to help support special revenue funds.
