Throughout the summer, my wife and I (well, her mostly, I have been golfing) have been beautifying our home.  Upgrades like better drainage, decorations, plants and lighting.  After painting the window frames and doors different colors, we noticed a couple of standouts that were almost eyesores.  You've probably thought about how to make both of these items better but can you?  I have the answers for you!

Your Electrical Box

One of the more prominent features on a home is that big box with the glass bulb that shows just how much gaming into all hours of the night can cost you. Checking in with the Northwestern Energy people, yes in fact you can paint your power box.  However, there are a couple of things to be aware of when doing so.  Homeowners actually own the power box, so painting it isn't a problem.  However, you may want to scrape/sand on the metal, and use a rust proof type paint that is made for the outside elements.  Be careful not to get any paint into the box itself, and DO NOT paint any of the glass receptacle.  As long as it is still visible, you are good to go.

Your Gas Meter

After finding out the great news about my power box, I immediately thought of the gas meter that is on the side of my home.  The dingy grey could use a touch up also but not so fast!  There are different rules when it comes to the gas meter and the piping that goes with it.

After contacting the fine folks with Energy West, I am certainly glad I didn't just go ahead without asking.  While you may paint your gas pipe which leads after the regulator and meter, you may NOT paint any of the incoming line to the meter, nor can you paint the actual meter for the gas.  While that may seem like a bummer, after speaking with Energy West, you may request that yours be painted.  If you notice corrosion, paint peeling, etc. on Energy West's piping and meter, call to make an appointment for them to come to your home.  They will be able to make it look brand new again for you!
