Montana Parents: This TikTok Challenge Is Targeting Backpacks

The kids are back in school and for many parents, that means making sure the kids are behaving and completing all of their homework. But this is 2025 and things are a little bit different. There are other influences and challenges that many of us didn't have to grow up worrying about.

A Social Media Challenge Has Kids Committing Theft

Here's a thought for the parents who have kids in school today: Can you imagine if we had social media back when we were in school? And I'll be honest with you - if social media and video recording was around back then like it was today, I can almost guarantee you that I would have been in a lot more trouble than I already got in.

And then there's the "challenges" that are taking place on social media. You've no doubt heard of these before with one of the most famous and lighthearted challenges ever being the "Ice Bucket Challenge", which raised awareness for ALS. The ALS Association even said that the challenge helped in their mission to fight ALS according to their site.

But today? It seems like social media challenges are becoming more about high-risk situations with high-stakes... like illegal activity.

When scrolling through my timeline, I came across a link to what's being called the "Nike Backpack Zipper Pull" TikTok trend.

It doesn't take a detective to figure out what the challenge is, so when I looked it up, it's exactly what it sounds like. Kids are stealing the zipper tags on backpacks belonging to other kids, often without the kids being aware it happened.

If I'm being honest, this has to be one of the dumbest challenges I've ever heard of. The zipper pulls are essentially glorified shoelaces with plastic on a backpack and kids are trying to steal them. Imagine being a kid and getting in serious trouble for stealing one of these zipper pulls.

It's just not worth it.
