How Costco Membership Works
Costco is a membership-based warehouse business, meaning you actually have to pay to shop there.
Places like Costco and Sam's Club can be worth the membership fee thanks to the ability to save money when buying in bulk.
Costco offers tiered levels of membership, and it's the highest level that is going to be benefiting from these new rules, which went into effect on September 1.
Executive vs. Gold Star Membership Levels
While Costco does offer multiple tiered levels, we're focusing on the Gold Star ($65 per month) and Executive ($130 per month) levels.
Executive members can start shopping at 9a, a full hour before Gold Star members. While on Saturday that time frame is cut down to just a half hour, as all members will be let in at 9:30a.
This is not without controversy, as plenty of Gold Star members are upset with the new hours and rules.
Costco’s Response To The Controversy
However, Costco is defending their decision and told Business Insider the following:
“Our Executive Members are our most loyal members, and we want to reward them for their commitment to Costco.”
