The Most Common “How Do You Spell” Searches in America

These days, if you don’t know something, it takes about two seconds to find the answer thanks to the little computer we all carry around in our pockets.

And apparently, one of the most common things people are asking Google is, “How do you spell...?”

Unscramble Study Uses Google Trends to Find Hardest Words to Spell

Unscramble, a website people use for games like Wordle and Scrabble, took a look at Google Trends data to figure out which words Americans struggle to spell the most.

Looking at searches between January 1 and May 18, they found a lot of the toughest words had endings like “-ly,” “-ate,” “-ent,” and “-ious.”

And the word Montana residents struggled with the most had one of those tricky suffix, any guess as to what it was?

Is Autocorrect Making Us Worse At Spelling?

“Appreciate.”

Honestly, I get it. It’s one of those words where I have to stop halfway through typing it and wonder "are there two P’s or just one?"

And don’t feel too bad about it either. According to the study, Colorado residents struggled to spell “color,” Florida struggled with “school,” and Nevada apparently had issues spelling “teacher.”

Unscramble also pointed out that autocorrect and AI might actually be making us worse at spelling because we rely on them so much now.

So next time you misspell a word and have to rely on Google, just "appreciate" you're not the only one.
