Two Montana Men Face Felony Charges Over Illegal Duck Hunting

When I was a teenager, I got my hunting license and on my first pheasant hunt, I almost shot my mom in the face.

So trust me, I’m not exactly the world’s greatest hunter. But even I know you can’t shoot & kill hundreds of ducks and not expect to get in trouble for it.

Simms and Bozeman Hunters Accused of Killing 223 Ducks

Two Montana men are now facing felony charges after authorities say they killed and stockpiled more than 200 ducks (a total of 223) earlier this year.

John Carullo of Simms and Matthew Krekelberg of Bozeman allegedly blew past both the daily bag limit and possession limit, killing a total of 223 ducks along the Sun River.

According to Montana FWP, game warden Per Wolfisberg was tipped off by a landowner. After observing the two men for a period of time, he approached them and reportedly found 66 dead ducks from that day alone.

Value of the Illegal Duck Stockpile in Montana

That’s well over Montana’s legal daily bag limit of seven ducks per hunter, along with the possession limit of 21 unprocessed birds.

In Montana, each duck is valued at $25, meaning the 223 ducks were valued at $5,575.

The two men appeared in court on May 1 and were charged with felony unlawful possession, shipment, or transportation of game birds.

If convicted, they could face fines up to $50,000, up to five years in prison, and the loss of hunting, fishing, and trapping privileges for as long as three years.
