Easy Reminders on Fire Prevention for Montana Winter Cold

It is kind of weird and a little difficult to think that less than 10 days ago I was golfing in Montana.  Just 4 days before Santa was set to come to our homes.  The weather Mother Nature sent us was definitely nice.

But, as 2025 rolls into play, it appears that she has regained her senses and is actually going to make winter happen in our state.  That also means the cold and trying to stay warm safely in it.

Recent Fires in Great Falls Prompt a Reminder from GFFR

In December 2024 the Great Falls Fire Rescue responded to several different structure fires within the borders of the city.  And as colder temperatures start to happen, more people will be looking for heat sources.  Some of those may not be the best choice.

Home fires occur more during the winter months than at any other time of the year in Montana.  Electrical problems, heat sources too close to flammable materials, or even exhaust systems catching homes on fire.

Here Are Easy Tips to Help Keep You Safe during the Cold in Montana

In a reminder from the GFFR and from FEMA, there are several ways to remain warm and stay safe this winter season.

  • Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away from the heat source.  Fireplaces, wood stoves, space heaters or radiators.
  • Plug only one heat source into a house outlet.
  • Keep portable generators outside the home, as far away as possible from windows or structures.
  • Install and test carbon monoxide alarms at least once a month.
  • Have a qualified professional clean your chimney or duct work each year.
  • Store cooled ashes in tightly sealed metal can at least 10 feet away from your home or any other structures.
