Riding shotgun means opening the gates, picking up the mail, or in the case of winter, getting out and shoveling or putting on chains. If you are really old school, you would get out and turn the hubs to engage the 4x4.

But there is a new way to get out of those slippery and stuck situations on the backroads. Ever heard of a snow sock for your car? Yes, they are a real thing, but do they work as well as chains on your vehicle?

Are Snow Socks a Viable Alternative to Chains in Montana
In a testing report via Consumer Reports, I found some interesting details when it comes to the viability of these on our roads in Montana.
Sure, these are possible to use in an emergency, but for everyday winter travel, definitely not. There are a few drawbacks to using these that I agree with from the review.
- Difficulty in getting them to cover the entire tire
- It often is easier with two people
- Speeds are limited to 25mph

In a snap these may work, but having a good set of chains for your vehicle is probably a better idea for the inclement weather that can come with a Montana winter storm.
